HISTORY
OF ALL POWER, INC.
The history of All Power Inc. (API) starts with its original company “Smith
Electric Company” which was an electric motor repair shop located on 4th
and Jones Street in downtown Sioux City, IA.
“Smith Electric” was owned and operated by Axel Smith and serviced local
packinghouses, as well as other industries using electric motors, all through
the early 1900’s.
In 1926 Axel Smith hired Swen Anderson and taught him the motor repair
business. After Axel’s death, Swen bought the business from Axel’s son, and
operated the business as a motor repair shop into the late 1950’s when Vern
Hughes became his partner.
A truck route, at this time, had been established serving South Dakota,
Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska packing houses for picking up and delivering
motors for repairs and as time went on these plants began to request delivery of
other industrial items, as well as the repaired motors.
In 1959, Gene Anderson Sr. came to work for “Smith Electric” and formed an
engineering department to develop more items to sell and to work with the plants
maintenance departments for additional conveying systems.
By 1961, the company had been offered (and accepted) “distributorships”
with many large manufacturing companies such as: Linkbelt Co., Chain Belt Co.,
Gates Rubber Co., Chicago Cutlery Co., Russell Harrington Co., etc. The motor
business was slowly phasing out because of new modern techniques used in the
manufacture of motors creating a situation where it was cheaper to buy a new
motor than have one repaired.
So in 1961, to fit its new image as an industrial supplier, a new name was
selected for the company – All Power Inc.
The company was incorporated in 1962 and is a closely held business owned
by two families, servicing “food processing plants (mainly meat packing plants)
throughout the U.S and Canada.
